DUDLEY RED GARRETT MEMORIAL AWARD

DUDLEY (RED) GARRETT MEMORIAL AWARD

garrett_200.jpgThe Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award, as voted on by league coaches, media and players, honors Dudley (Red) Garrett, a young player who gave his life during World War II while serving in the Canadian Navy.

Each year, the Garrett Award is presented to the American Hockey League’s outstanding rookie player.

Tragically, Garrett played just one season of professional hockey, splitting the 1942-43 campaign between the AHL’s Providence Reds and the NHL’s New York Rangers. On Nov. 25, 1944, Garrett lost his life while working on a destroyer escort run off the coast of Newfoundland. He was 20.
