mathers_200.jpgNamed after Frank Mathers, a 1992 inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame and a member of the inaugural class of inductees into the AHL Hall of Fame (2006), the Frank Mathers Trophy is now awarded to the team that finishes with the best regular-season record in the Eastern Conference.

Mathers, who passed away in 2005, began his AHL career in 1948 as a player for the Pittsburgh Hornets. In 1956 he joined the Hershey Bears as a player and went on to lead the franchise as head coach, general manager and president.

During his 35 years in Chocolatetown, Mathers helped lead the Bears to 15 Calder Cup Finals and six championships.
